What does an EGR valve do? It controls the flow of exhaust gases recirculated back into the engine's intake manifold. This lowers peak combustion temperatures, which reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and helps the engine stay within emissions standards.
Signs of a failing EGR valve? Rough idle, hesitation under acceleration, increased fuel consumption, a check engine light related to EGR flow or position, excessive NOx emissions, or an engine entering derate mode.
